A Breastfeeding Milestone: Mamava Is in All 50 States
We’re celebrating a major milestone for breastfeeding—breastfeeding parents can now find Mamava pods in all 50 states!
Founded by two working moms fed up with pumping in bathrooms, Mamava’s mission is to reduce breastfeeding barriers by making sure that breastfeeding parents have lactation spaces wherever they go. It’s official: parents can now find private lactation spaces to pump in every state in the U.S.A.
We placed our first lactation pod at the Burlington International Airport in 2013. Today there are thousands of Mamava lactation pods across all 50 states (and Puerto Rico!) in airports, hospitals, schools, offices, sports stadiums, zoos, museums, and military bases. But we’re just getting started. Breastfeeding parents everywhere need a clean and private lactation space to pump when they return to work or leave home.
Changing culture takes time. It also takes persistence, patience, and progressive public policy—like the 2022 PUMP for Nursing Mothers Act amendment to the federal Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) that requires all employers to provide breastfeeding employees with reasonable break time and a workplace lactation accommodation to express milk. Every year we’re witnessing positive changes with new state, municipal, and industry-specific laws that offer additional protections for breastfeeding people. (Do you know the laws in your state? Our comprehensive state-by-state legislation guide can help.)
Our business is to support breastfeeding. And supporting breastfeeding is good for babies, moms, and public health. You can help normalize breastfeeding, and be an advocate for breastfeeding parents, by making sure they have the support and spaces they need.
