The Worst-Case Scenario Guide for Breastfeeding

Breastfeeding at home—reclining, nursing pillow and all—is one thing, but baby-feeding on the go isn’t always easy and can be downright challenging. Luckily, Mamava delivers the info you need to feed your little one with confidence, no matter what sticky situation you find yourself in.

Breastfeeding + tear gas

If you’re protesting in the streets (with your baby at home) and exposed to tear gas—through skin contact, eye contact, or breathing—follow the guidelines by the La Leche League of Asia and Middle East. Use gloves to remove all your clothing and then shower with hot water and soap. The chemicals used in riot control substances cause temporary local irritation—not systemic poisoning. While there’s a lack of research on the effects of tear gas on breastfeeding, experts recommend waiting one hour after exposure before breastfeeding (based on the half-life of the chemicals commonly used).

Breastfeeding + the coronavirus pandemic

There’s scientific consensus that breastfeeding is still the best feeding option for babies (and also boosts immunity). Practice good hygiene: wash your hands, wear a mask if you’re sick, and sterilize surfaces (before and after) if you’re pumping. Breastfeeding + natural disasters

If you live in an area where extreme Mother Nature events are common (or imminent), channel your inner prepper and pack a “Go Bag.” In addition to basic disaster supplies, be sure to include the essentials you’ll need to continue nursing if you’re temporarily displaced: disinfecting wipes and a sanitizing spray, a manual pump (be prepared for power outages), and a shawl for privacy and comfort. For more resources on breastfeeding and disaster preparedness, visit the CDC and United States Breastfeeding Committee (USBC).

Breastfeeding + public haters

Mothers have the right to breastfeed in public in all 50 states. So if you’re feeding your babe and someone gives you side-eye or asks you to cover up, ignore them or gently drop some legal knowledge. (Check out more strategies to sideline shamers!)
